Sarah Ghazal Ali - A poet whose work I first became acquainted with not through her poetry, but through a digital feature for Poetry Magazine titled The Pen, the Throat, the Ear: On Ghazals. Her work is...honestly beyond my limited command of the English language to adequately describe. It is beautiful, yes, but when I try to phrase exactly how that beauty is achieved, or what qualities make it beautiful, I always fail. Her debut collection, Theophanies, arrives January 2024, and I can't wait to receive my copy.
Kazuo Ishiguro - Obviously not part of the indie writing scene, but my GOD The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go are absolute MASTERPIECES. Possibly my favorite author. The beauty and elegance of his writing is so subtly weaved into the fabric of his work that I feel it is often lost on people who read his work.
Francesca Leader - I first came across Leader's work in Wigleaf, with her piece "Eight Essential Turkish Phrases for a Doomed Relationship." From there I looked more into her poetry and...wow. She writes so poignantly about relationships (and other topics, of course) that I'm unsure how you could call yourself human if her writing doesn't resonate with you.
I'll add more to this list later, every pharmacy in the area is out of my ADHD meds and frankly I can't finish literally any task I start right now so........
Stanchion - A fantastic zine/small press. Terrific editor who has put out some of the most interesting things I've read lately.
Voidspace Zine - An online zine focusing on interactive arts. Issues are fascinating and the pop-up calls are incredibly fun. (Yeah, this one published me but that's not why they're up here.)
Pithead Chapel - If I could only have one literary accomplishment in my life, it'd probably be getting a piece published in Pithead Chapel. An absolutely fantastic publication. Each month they drop an absolute BANGER of an issue.
Idle Ink - Okay, yeah, this was the first place to publish me, but that's not why it's up here! Each release always has a couple absolute gems that I thoroughly enjoy.
Taco Bell Quarterly - The Paris Review can suck on a chalupa.
A BUNCH OF OTHER ONES - This page would be endless if I listed all the awesome journals and magazines I enjoy. I'll likely come back and write more about some of them later.
